...day two...

the #4 bus stops approximately every 15 minutes just two blocks west from my apartment. my bike is currently in the shop awaiting it's axle repair. i get him back on monday. until then, the bus it is. well, in the mornings at least - the hours of which i am less eager to walk uphill to school.

the bus ride is about 8 minutes. the walk home (which i chose yesterday and today for both exercise and frugalness) takes about 25 minutes. the afternoon weather has been pleasant. this walk also enables me to learn more about what type of shops line each side of blanshard st.

today was a less boring day than yesterday.
in the morning we were able to meet some of last years graduating class. about 6 or 7 students came to speak with us. andrew lint, shelley lipke, and arnold lim were a few who spoke with us. the time with them was part intimidating, part encouraging and mostly informative. they explained that we are about to experience the fastest, most memorable, exciting and stressed out 10 months of our lives. awesome. we were able to flip through their portfolios as well which was helpful as it gave you an idea of what you can and will accomplish.

the second half of the day began our times of segregation. you see, all day yesterday and all this morning both programs hung out together. after today we'll be split up and will only meet with our specific program classmates, understandably. during my time with the WI (written image = name of program) class we met more of our instructors and were given a rundown of what the program will look like. i am extremely excited and equally anxious about the year to come. i'm pretty confident that this is going to be one of the most exciting years of my life.

tonight some of us students will be driving & walking around town photographing random things for our first assignment - a 24 item photo scavenger hunt. RAD.

a few of my favourite items on the list:

- killer whale (life size)
- tourist attraction, complete with tourist
- barb's fish n chips
- neon
- world's tallest totem pole

game on.

...first day...

notes about the first day of class:

1. no one ever enjoys when teachers read over all the "please don't do drugs" or "please remember to lock up your bike" rules from the student handbook.

2. the awkward silence of all the students first seeing one another out front of school was funny and comforting.

3. everyone seems REALLY excited about the programs which, in turn, makes me even more excited.

4. two students are from iceland.

5. one student is from italy.

6. one student was on this years olympic men's rowing team for canada and brought home a gold medal.

7. one student, lisa, has epilepsy and thus has with her a rad, adorable working dog named india.

8. friends in school have never been so easy to make.

9. four of us from school all plan to go to the same church on sunday night.

10. i need to get renters insurance to cover my camera gear.

all in all it was a slightly boring but mostly exciting first day. i loved meeting so many people from all walks of life and all ages (one as young as 18 and one is a grandmother). i am super excited to be surrounded by a bunch of creative minds. i am also super excited to begin next monday starting my "real" classes.

two more days of orientation to go.
sara and i are planning to invite people over for a potluck on saturday. i hope we have everything unpacked by then - ha!

yup, things are good.

oh, and i got to chat with my brother, sis-n-law and nephew on skype last night. rad! and today i got to chat with the folks. rad X 2! skype makes me feel like i didn't leave home. it's very comforting when you're really missing familiar faces. if you don't have it, you should download it so you can talk to me. or bust an ichat session. seriously.

also, thanks to my last post i have had a lot of people offer me various routes where i can watch LOST when it begins.
this makes me happy.

hope all your readers had an equally splendid day!

...network nazi's...

i was in canada during the second half of the olympics. it was during this time i learned that NBC does not allow people outside of the good 'ol USofA to watch their online programs.

tonight i attempted to watch prison break on FOX.com and stumbled upon a similar problem.

this got me to thinking....will i not be able to watch LOST on abc.com once the new season begins?so i click on over to abc.com and sure enough the little white words from hell are displayed across my screen:
"only viewers within the united states may view these full-length episodes."

what the crap?!
this is rediculous. i do not have cable here and i'm happy about that for the most part...but i cannot watch LOST online because i happen to be 3 hours too far north? BULLCRAP!!!!!

i am not a happy camper right now.
nope.
not
at
all.

...saanich fair...

yesterday sara & i went with some of her friends to the saanich fair. it was a perfect weather day. sun was out, skies were blue and a cool breeze kept throughout the day.

sara & i...

we got to watch an agility show with some crazy dogs. i thought this one was cute but i sure wouldn't want to maintain that fluffball hairdo all the time! :)

we missed the draft show by about an hour...these two pics are mostly for my mom... hi mom!

sara grubbin on some kosher beef...

i keep calling these llamas, but they're actually alpacas...much cuter than llamas, i think....

i forget the species of this ginormous pig, but it's endangered and the get up to 700lbs. that's a lot of bacon...

after the fair we went to sara's friends home to eat some bbq'd burgers.
everyone i have met thus far has been really nice and welcoming but i've noticed that i have been a bit reclusive in my participation in conversations here, mostly because i'm not in the same place as sara & her friends. i don't feel i connect with them on many levels. i really had a hard time coming home last night and missed everyone back in cali.

luckily, kat was online last night so i got to chat with her and that really helped. and this morning i got to chat with someone in my school program that goes to this church that i wanted to check out on sunday night so that was encouraging. i just really miss the community of like-minded souls i had at home. my life group seriously rocks and i miss them tremendously...but i am also excited to find a small group up here that i can connect with.

now i've got to go do some laundry, run to the camera store and take a walk.
cheers!

...a long, adventurous day...

today was a fun day!

sara and i slept in before we met her friend claire (a dude) and graham (also a dude) for breakfast at lady marmalade. the adventure, however, began on the way to the cafe...

you see, graham gives tours for a living. but not just any type of tour...he gives pedicab tours. no, not pediCUREs, pedicab TOURS. you know....where the tour-guide pedals a trike and you sit in the back and listen to them ramble off bits of history about the city you are touring. well...when claire and graham met us at our apartment they had just finished a photoshoot for graham's future business cards. that meant he was riding his trike. that meant we all got to ride in his trike as he carted us around town giving us examples of how he lies to tourists about what they're seeing. it was awesome.

here's a really bad photo of us looking like happy tourists...

breakfast was delicious, even if it took quite a while to get to our table. i had this fabulous fruit, granola, honey, yogurt parfait thing...

after breakfast graham went to work while sara, claire and i walked around chinatown for a bit. then we walked over to the noodle box so sara could talk to the managers there about her school/work schedule. then we walked down this alley which lead to the break area for noodle box employees which is also where we found claire blazing a joint. yup, gotta love canada. that's going to take some getting use to.

my first shopping cart photo in victoria - yay!

after that we walked down to ride the harbor ferry over to fisherman's wharf which is basically a small area where a lot of houseboats are for sale and you can buy ice cream and crab legs for lunch, if you like. here's some of the wharf area....

after that we walked around for a bit before heading home.

at 8pm tonight i visited adore victoria which is a local church that reminds me a LOT of the porch...only not as awesome. still pretty cool, though. i haven't been to a church service on my own in i don't know how long. it felt really good...especially them musical worship. it's been far too long. the guy who spoke at adore tonight wasn't the normal pastor but was a guy named evan who spoke about anointing and referenced 2 Kings 9. good stuff. a number of girls were really friendly to me so that made me feel more at ease. i'm pretty sure i'll go back next thursday but i still want to check out one or two more churches.

oh yeah, before church i listened to part of the DNC on NPR. that deal has been rockin my world. michelle obama's speech the other day......daaaaaaaang.

anyway, after church i came home to my oh la la cupcake that i purchased earlier in the day. chocolate-cake-cherry-buttercream-icing-awesomeness - what?! this was so i could celebrate cash's birthday in style. :)

now, it is time for sleep.
hope everyone else had a fun day!

shalom.

...living in the light...

living in the light.

For though your hearts were once full of darkness, now you are full of light from the Lord, and your behavior should show it! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.
